Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., an innovative non-profit provider of evidence-based treatment for substance use and mental health disorders, has announced the opening of Breakwater, a new intensive treatment residence for adolescents in Methuen, Massachusetts. Developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF), the program will offer individualized, trauma-informed care for adolescent males, including cognitive behavioral health and recovery support.

“At a time when adolescent behavioral health needs are rapidly increasing, Breakwater reflects our commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care to young individuals and their families,” said Kurt Isaacson, President and CEO of Spectrum Health Systems. “We look forward to partnering with DCF and continuing to expand our adolescent services to address these needs.”

Breakwater features a therapeutic, home-like environment with 9 beds and a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, case managers and support staff all trained in trauma-informed care. The residence provides a full range of evidence-based services, including individual and group counseling, educational support, life skills training and family engagement and is uniquely designed to help adolescents build stability and confidence as they move toward the next stage of their journey.

“Providing this community with timely, compassionate behavioral health care is essential,” said Katherine Canada, Ph.D., Assistant Commissioner, Services Network, Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. “Through our collaboration with Spectrum Health Systems and programs like Breakwater, we’re expanding access to vital resources that help young people strengthen their wellbeing and build meaningful, hopeful futures.”

The opening of Breakwater builds on Spectrum Health Systems’ longstanding dedication to supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use and mental health challenges. Expanding access through specialized, evidence-based services reinforces Spectrum’s mission in delivering care that helps guide individuals to a brighter path forward.
