Fatherhood and Addiction

Published On: June 16th, 2017Categories: Addiction

There has long been a stigma surrounding women struggling with addiction, and mothers in particular. Mothers are more apt to shy away from recovery treatment, in part because they are not aware of the problem they may have with substance abuse, but also because they feel guilty for leaving their children behind while they seek treatment for themselves.

With the nation celebrating Father’s Day this weekend, we wanted to celebrate those fathers that have made the difficult decision to leave their homes and families in order to seek treatment for addiction, and make life better for themselves and all those around them. We believe it is important to shed some light on fatherhood and addiction, and the hardships faced by fathers who are struggling.

To this day, many fathers are the breadwinners of the family, pursuing growing careers to provide for and support their loved ones. The stresses of a high-ranking job can affect anyone, which is where we see a number of men turn to alcohol or drugs to escape work-related issues. But, this isn’t the sole factor that may drive a father to substance abuse. Trouble at home, with friends and family or simply being around the wrong crowd can all lead to substance abuse issues.

But addicted fathers are still fathers nonetheless. They are still the men that make those around them laugh and cry, and will do anything for their kids. That is why it is important to understand that their addiction affects the whole family, and their battle for recovery is one that involves the entire family unit. This is why at Spectrum Health Systems, we encourage all family members to get involved with the recovery process, as it is essential in maintaining long-term recovery.

We wish a happy Father’s Day to all those dads out there, whether they be living in sobriety or just thinking of starting their road to recovery. We are here for you.
