Current Program
Advancing Medications for Addiction Treatment in Correctional Settings
Time Period: March 2025 through February 2026
Schedule: Sessions are held on the third Thursday of the month from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm EST
Target Audience:
Correctional staff involved in MAT / MOUD care; correctional MAT / MOUD program physicians, APRNs, nurses, social workers, case managers, and recovery coaches; and potential providers planning to do this work in a correctional setting.
Overview:
This ECHO training addresses the growing need for medications for substance use disorders in correctional facilities across the country. With only a limited number of states offering these life-saving interventions, this series aims to equip correctional systems to adopt and implement medication for addiction treatment, including medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) programs effectively.
Our goal is to assist participants in developing and delivering evidence-based MOUD services within a correctional setting, improving strategies for addressing logistical and systemic barriers, and fostering collaboration among healthcare teams. Expected outcomes include increased MOUD access, improved patient outcomes, and reduced opioid-related morbidity and mortality within incarcerated populations.
Facilitators promote active learning through case-based discussions, interactive Q&A sessions, and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. The ECHO model engages participants in real-world problem-solving, fosters collaboration, and encourages the use of evidence-based practices to address challenges in implementing and sustaining MOUD programs in correctional settings.
We ensure valid content by incorporating current clinical guidelines, peer-reviewed research, and evidence-based practices. In addition, regular reviews by the planning committee, participant feedback, and alignment with SAMHSA and other authoritative standards ensure accuracy, relevance, and applicability to correctional healthcare settings.
