At Spectrum Health Systems, we’re committed to developing the next generation of compassionate, knowledgeable, and skilled behavioral health professionals. Our internship program provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience in a range of treatment settings serving individuals and families affected by substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Who is eligible to apply?

We welcome students from a wide range of academic programs, including:

  • Social Work
  • Counseling & Psychology
  • Addiction Studies and CADC or LADC-track programs
  • Nursing and Integrated/Behavioral Health programming
  • Human Services

Are Spectrum internships paid positions?

Yes. All interns at Spectrum are paid employees of the organization. We believe that meaningful learning deserves meaningful support, and we are committed to creating equitable pathways into the behavioral health workforce.

What if I do not want to be paid for my internship? 

Spectrum Health Systems requires that all interns are paid employees. This is an organizational policy designed to ensure equity, consistency, and access to the same training, supervision, and workplace protections offered to all staff. Even if your academic program does not require compensation, we do not offer unpaid internship placements.

Where do internship placements occur?

Internship opportunities are available at sites across Massachusetts, including:

  • Residential and Inpatient Treatment Programs
  • Outpatient Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP)
  • Peer Recovery and Support Services
  • Youth & Family / Department of Children and Families (DCF) Funded Programs
  • Justice-Involved / Department of Correction (DOC) Funded Treatment Programs
    (Some placements require additional background screening.)

What will I learn as an intern at Spectrum?

Interns receive individualized experience according to the needs of their internship, including:

  • Supervision and mentorship from trained, experienced professionals
  • Exposure to evidence-based therapeutic practices, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care
  • Experience collaborating on interdisciplinary teams
  • Opportunities to develop skills in counseling, case management, recovery support, documentation, and person-centered care
