Special Report - Spectrum to Break Ground on Brand New Residential Facility

Construction will start soon on Spectrum’s newest residential facility, located on a beautiful tract of land adjacent to our existing treatment campus in Westborough, Massachusetts.  The new parcel was purchased in 2012 explicitly for developing new, state-of-the-art amenities for people seeking treatment for substance use disorders and/or mental health issues.  The new facility will replace Spectrum’s existing residential program building, which dates back to the early 1900s.

Spectrum’s Residential Building Committee is charged with leading the design and construction phases.  Over the past year, this group engaged Dimella Shaffer to provide architectural services in constructing the new residential building.  Headquartered in Boston, Dimella Shaffer is a 40-year old architectural planning and design firm with an impressive resume.  After several meetings with the Residential Building Committee, Dimella Shaffer submitted conceptual designs incorporating four 25-bed standalone residential units, a centralized intake area, family meeting space, fitness room, outdoor courtyard, a central dining area or Great Room, and a commercial grade kitchen.  The final design is shown below.new res building

More recently, Spectrum’s Residential Building Committee engaged a construction management firm to manage the construction of the 39,000 square foot facility.  Worcester-based Cutler Associates was selected for their vast experience managing large-scale healthcare construction projects, in particular their ability to fast-track scheduling and contain costs through continuous cost estimating.

We anticipate the new residential facility will open this time next year.  It is expected to attract people seeking treatment from all walks of life, including those with commercial insurance and those with the ability to self-pay.  Later this year, Spectrum will open a new residential program for private pay clients at the Giblin House, not far from the site of the new residential building.

Stay tuned for updates on these exciting projects in regular editions of Inside Spectrum.
