Two years ago, Candi spent Thanksgiving alone, in an abandoned house, sick from heroin withdrawal. In less than one year, she had gone from abusing prescription pain medication to losing everything – her kids, her home, her self-respect and the respect of her family.

CandiCandi grew up in what she calls a “typical, average” family and didn’t touch drugs until she was 26 years old. Four years later, actions fueled by her addiction led her to prison. Behind bars she learned she was five months pregnant.   Offered the chance to become a resident of Spectrum’s Giblin House — a family preservation program designed to help women and their children prepare for community integration — Candi gratefully accepted. “I didn’t want to have my baby born in jail, and I wanted to reconnect with my two sons, and I also really wanted to learn how to get better,” said Candi.   In November, Candi graduated from Giblin House with her three-month-old daughter, Haylo. While she is nervous about leaving Giblin House, a place she calls “a real home,” she is also confident she has the tools she needs to live drug free, and looks forward to building a real home with her family.

Giblin HouseCandi’s story is just one of so many that tell of the importance of a real home in achieving and maintaining one’s recovery — more than walls and a roof, it’s a safe, dignified place with love, encouragement and support.   Your monetary donation this Holiday Season provides the foundation for Spectrum’s nonprofit mission. It is a gift to real families and individuals who are now on a path leading to a better life — free from addiction.   Last year, more than 45,000 individuals found their way to recovery with Spectrum’s help, and Candi’s story describes just a small part of the continuum of care that Spectrum provides to those in need.   Your generosity allows us to help people rebuild their lives — and their homes. Although, often that home may be the first real home they’ve known.   However modest, we rely on your donation — and today your gift goes even further as we continually work to improve and enhance our services.
