Spectrum Health Systems recently held a commencement ceremony to celebrate the first two women to complete its highly acclaimed Women & Children's program at the newly constructed Women’s Center which opened last fall in Westborough, Massachusetts.

On June 17, more than fifty attendees, including family members, Spectrum staff, current clients and their children, listened to moving stories of transformation that described personal journeys leading from overwhelming helplessness to unbound hopefulness for these two women and their children.

"I never knew there was a way out ... until I came here," program graduate Amy told the audience. "I learned to forgive myself and my past," she said.

"This is the first program of any kind that I ever completed or graduated from in my whole life," said graduate Tatica. "I learned how to be a loving mother to my daughter," she added.

Acting Program Director Jeanne Brennan praised the graduates' hard work and said, "They've grown into women of dignity and honor," adding, "This is just the beginning."

Mark Anderson, Spectrum's executive director of inpatient services, told the audience that the event did mark a graduation, but not necessarily a completion, as a variety of Spectrum services remain available to Amy and Tatica after leaving the Women's Center to assist them in their ongoing recovery.

Located on Spectrum's Westborough Treatment Campus, The Women's Center offers residential services for up to 26 court-involved women seeking recovery from addiction to drugs or alcohol, providing them the opportunity to rebuild their lives in a dignified environment while learning to care for their young children.

The goal of the Women & Children's program is to break the intergenerational cycle of abuse, victimization, repeat trauma experiences and criminal behavior which often leads to child neglect and abuse, loss of custody, disrupted family relationships and continued involvement with law enforcement agencies.

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. is a private, nonprofit substance abuse treatment and mental health service organization with corporate headquarters in Worcester, Massachusetts. Spectrum currently operates more than 110 treatment programs in community and institutional settings throughout Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, Iowa and Washington State.
