Spectrum Health Systems was recently awarded a contract by the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) to provide chemical dependency treatment staff, administration, quality assurance and program improvements as a part of the Washington State DOC continuum of chemical dependency treatment services. Programs are provided throughout the state, including 19 prisons/jails, 13 work release facilities, and more than 20 community-based offices. Services include therapeutic community treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment, serving more than 3,000 offenders at any given time.

Forty years ago, Spectrum Health Systems established one of the first therapeutic community programs in the country for the treatment of substance abuse. Working with leading researchers in the field, the company later adapted its model to serve the unique needs of criminal offenders with addictions. For the past sixteen years, Spectrum’s correctional treatment programs have grown to meet the increasing demand of state correctional agencies across the country.

“This new contract is exciting for many reasons,” commented Charles Faris, president and CEO. “Mostly, it impacts more lives than any other of our operations across the country. In 1969, we began as one of the first therapeutic community treatment providers in the country. We now operate the largest in-prison TC program in the country - 2,035 beds at the Airway Heights Corrections Center. Also, we are the largest single employer of chemical dependency professionals in the State of Washington.”

Based in Worcester, Massachusetts, Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit substance abuse and mental health treatment provider. In addition to providing contract staff and management services in Washington State, Spectrum operates programs in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Georgia, Tennessee, Maine, Maryland and Iowa – serving more than 20,000 adults and at-risk youth each year.
