Spectrum Health Systems joined the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, City of Worcester, UMass Memorial, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School as lead partners to launch Ready, Set, Quit - a quit smoking pilot promotion for residents of Worcester, Massachusetts. The promotion, which ran from January 23 through February 17, encouraged interested Worcester adults to call the state's Smokers' Helpline (1-800-879-8678) for telephone support, and a free two-week supply of nicotine patches. In all, over 50 community-based organizations were supportive partners of the project and over 900 nicotine patch kits were distributed!

Cigarette smoking is still the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Massachusetts. The smoking rate among residents of Worcester is 29% higher than the statewide rate, contributing to avoidable illnesses, including lung cancer, asthma and cardiovascular disease.
