Please Support Spectrum’s Healing Garden Project
Spectrum Health Systems is in the process of raising capital to construct a healing garden at its new inpatient substance abuse treatment facility in Central Massachusetts and would greatly appreciate your help. The proposed garden is designed as a welcoming, serene green space for clients to pause, assess, reflect and move forward along the path of recovery. It exemplifies our commitment to strengthening mind, body and spirit throughout the treatment and recovery process.
Research has shown that viewing natural landscapes helps foster healing and recovery by evoking positive feelings, reducing negative emotions and decreasing stressful thoughts. Healing gardens are now used in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions—from chronic behavioral health disorders to acute medical injury. One notable example of an outdoor healing space in Massachusetts is at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown where new outdoor space is used in the specialized treatment of brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke rehabilitation. Other examples of healing gardens include the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden in Harvard, Mass. used in the specialized treatment of cancer patients and the Saint Vincent Hospital courtyard garden in Worcester.
