More than 50 residents living at Spectrum Health Systems' Residential Rehabilitation Program in Westborough, Massachusetts, were present Saturday afternoon, December 26, 2009, to meet and thank a North Carolina family with local ties that provided over $4,000 in unsolicited monetary donations to the program this holiday season.

Spectrum Health Systems Chief Operating Officer Laura Ames and Director of Corporate Compliance Michael Stuart were each honored with an award at the Association for Behavioral Healthcare’s (ABH) Annual Provider Celebration. The event recognizes the accomplishments of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to community-based behavioral health over the past year.

“Having two Spectrum employees recognized by the ABH for management and leadership skills shows how dedicated this organization is from the top level down to improving the lives of individuals impacted by addiction and mental illness,” said Spectrum Health Systems President and CEO Charles J. Faris.

Ms. Ames received the Provider Recognition Award for Administration and Finance for her personal commitment to quality and innovation in the management of program finances and operations. “It is a special honor to receive an award from one of the premier organizations advocating for mental health and addiction treatment services,” said Ms. Ames.

Mr. Stuart received the Innovative Practice Award for his involvement in the Massachusetts Standardized Documentation Project (MSDP) Leadership Team. “Being a part of the Leadership Team has been a great experience. This award is a good example of how interagency collaboration can lead to innovative practices and processes,” said Mr. Stuart.

Approximately 370 people attended the event, held on October 23rd at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Mass.

Prior to joining Spectrum, Ms. Ames served as COO for iCare Management where she oversaw the operation of nine skilled nursing facilities, totaling $100 million. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing Administration and a Master of Business Administration. Mr. Stuart has been Spectrum’s director of corporate compliance for the past three years. He holds a Master of Business Administration.

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. recently hired Andrew Strecker as development associate and Nicole Langlois as government grants manager. 

Spectrum’s residential treatment program located at the Carroll County Long Term Treatment Facility in Sykesville, Maryland earned a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in April. Spectrum opened the 48-bed program two years ago when it was awarded a contract by the Department of Citizen Services.

“Spectrum has strong leadership and dedicated staff members who provide a continuum of services to a broad and diverse population,” wrote the survey team following an in-depth, onsite review of the program. “The organization ensures that services are provided in a healthy and safe environment that promotes dignity and respect.”

Clients in the program follow a structured daily schedule consisting of recovery groups, individual counseling, work therapy, recreational activities and continuing care planning. The program’s length of stay ranges between six and nine months, based on individual progress. Throughout treatment, clients learn relapse prevention strategies and make concrete plans for maintaining their recovery upon completion of the program.
