Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. recently earned a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its community-based substance abuse and mental health programs in Massachusetts. Following an in-depth, three-day survey, CARF accreditation is bestowed to providers who meet state-of-the-art national standards of performance. Providers who seek CARF accreditation demonstrate a commitment to continual quality improvement.

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. was recently awarded three contracts in Georgia. First, Spectrum was re-awarded a contract by the Department of Corrections to deliver residential substance abuse treatment services to 1,610 offenders at seven state facilities across the state. Spectrum’s programming focuses on recovery, relapse prevention and transition issues with added emphasis on criminal attitudes and behaviors. These highly successful programs have received full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) since 1996. In fact, three-year recidivism rates for inmates completing Spectrum’s residential treatment programs in Georgia were reduced by 9% in 2005 as compared to inmates in the general population.

This year’s national conference of the State Association of Addiction Services (SAAS) featured two presentations by members of Spectrum’s management team. SAAS is the national organization representing state provider associations and community-based programs for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Conference attendees included CEOs, senior managers, counselors, clinicians, funding agencies and policy makers from federal and state government.

Spectrum’s first topic, “How to Become an Employer of Choice through Innovative and Effective Staff Retention Methods,” was presented by Chief Operating Officer, Laura Ames and Director of Outpatient Services, Kristin Nolan. The presentation outlined a number of ways Spectrum has increased employee satisfaction while decreasing employee turnover rates. Spectrum continues to address the areas of staff retention and employee turnover with the intent of becoming known as the “Employer of Choice” in the field. 

The second presentation, “Strategic Planning: How Organizational Change and Quality Improvement Initiatives Can Enhance Treatment, Reduce Risk and Increase Revenue” introduced strategies for increasing accountability and managerial effectiveness. COO Laura Ames was joined by Director of Corporate Compliance, Michael Stuart in describing how Spectrum has benefited from its proactive, results-based approach to organizational change.

Spectrum recently launched a campaign to emphasize the importance of continuing care in maintaining one’s recovery. Last year, President Charles Faris formed a committee to develop a structured approach for implementing continuing care throughout Spectrum’s substance abuse treatment programs based on recognized best practices in the field. After a year of research, discussion and planning, a number of activities have been implemented to ensure that Spectrum is doing all that it can to help clients maintain their recovery over the long term.

“It’s really more a cultural shift than a campaign,” explained Faris. “While we’ve always recognized the importance of continuing care, now we’re taking tangible steps to make sure clients have the support they need to sustain what they’ve achieved during their time at Spectrum.”

Spectrum’s clinical team has incorporated a number of programming enhancements to help prepare clients for continuing their recovery following completion of treatment. Alumni associations have been formed in Westborough and Weymouth, Massachusetts for clients completing one of Spectrum’s residential programs. Monthly meetings provide a forum for alumni to give and receive support while establishing drug-free, productive lives in the community.

Additionally, Spectrum’s newly created continuing care database contains a wealth of information about community-based resources in such areas as sober housing, employment, substance abuse treatment, 12-step support groups, domestic violence, parenting, childcare, health care, mental health services, HIV/AIDS, and more. The Resource Directory is available to clients and staff in paper and electronic formats. The computer version allows users to search for specific resources based on individual needs.

All staff members receive specialized training in Spectrum’s treatment approach and continuing care methods, ensuring consistency across the organization. A variety of monitoring mechanisms are being used to evaluate Spectrum’s continuing care activities and measure their impact over time.

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. was awarded contracts by the Massachusetts Department of Health to operate two Regional Peer-to-Peer Recovery Support Centers. Located in Worcester and Marlborough, Massachusetts, Spectrum’s Recovery Support Centers will provide volunteer-driven, peer-to-peer support services for adults at varying stages of recovery, family members, friends, and members of the community who support recovery. “Peers” are individuals who have experienced addiction and recovery, either directly or as a family member or friend.
